88 meters of rock !
Percé Rock is a huge sheer rock formation in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula in Québec, off Percé Bay. Percé Rock appears from a distance like a ship under sail.
Why is Percé Rock famous ?
Percé Rock is a massive siliceous limestone stack formation, with sandstone and siltstone veins, with steep rock faces on all sides. It is 433 metres (1,421 ft) long, 90 metres (300 ft) wide, and 88 metres (289 ft) high at its highest point !
How is Percé Rock formed ?
The limestone itself formed more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian; today, Percé Rock stands as an indicator of the vast tectonic forces that raised the rock and mainland from the seafloor, where it formed, to its current position above sea level.
Visit the Percé UNESCO Global Geopark where you can admire a view of Percé from a glass platform suspended 200 metres (660 feet) above the ground. An excursion to Bonaventure Island is obviously a must: this is your chance to visit the most accessible northern gannet colony in the world !
